Stephen T. DeBerry was born in Norfolk, Virginia. Growing up, he developed an interest in photography at an early age. But it wasn't until he watched a documentary on the Vietnam War titled "The Best Years of Our Lives" that he decided to go to college to study photojournalism
As a student at Virginia State University, his sophomore year he was part of the student photojournalism team that covered the Governor's State of the Commonwealth address and won first place for photography. This led to a position as staff photographer for the Virginian-Pilot Newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia; where he worked as a staff photographer for 24 years. He also owns and operates "DeBerry Photo Service" - a commercial photography company located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
